UK mortgage lending up slightly

According to the Bank of England's lending report, mortgage lending for home purchases has been creeping up since the beginning of the year. However, remortgage activity has fallen back sharply. During the latter quarter of 2007, it enjoyed a temporary boom as interest rates fell.

Despite the recent recovery in mortgage lending, volumes are still a long way below the levels seen during the bubble.

  1. Pretty good trick by the banks considering they have no capital.

  2. I'd love to see this series back to before 2000, i.e., before the boom began. Your charts are always a joy to behold -- what package do you use to create them?

  3. It's also a traditional time to see an upturn, so it maybe that it is a natural adjustment and not reflecting any real change in the market.
